BATSS participates in collaborative meeting with key battery associations

On October 22, BATSS participated in a collaborative meeting with key battery associations in Petten, Netherlands, as part of their annual meeting on next-generation battery technologies, testing, and sustainability. This strategic event brought together key partners—the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA), and the European Green Vehicles Initiative Association (EGVIAfor2Zero)—to drive forward their mission of achieving zero-emission road transport.

At the heart of this collaboration, EGVIAfor2Zero, BEPA, and JRC provided a platform for knowledge sharing, where representatives from five European projects in the EU-INGENIOuS battery cluster—including BATSS, EXTENDED, NEXTBAT, TEMPEST, and VERSAPRINT—showcased the latest advancements in battery system safety and design. BATSS project coordinator Iosu Cendoya from CIDETEC Energy Storage presented a comprehensive safety-focused talk titled “Safe Efficient Battery System Based on Advanced Cell Technology: Safety Measures,” highlighting our project’s commitment to battery system safety in transport applications.

Throughout the day, discussions covered critical regulatory topics such as performance and durability requirements under the new Batteries Regulation, as well as the standardisation request towards CEN-CENELEC. JRC experts presented regulations related to electric vehicle safety, including the ongoing revisions for thermal propagation tests.

The collaborative environment allowed project teams to share safety challenges they face in battery design and explore solutions together, fostering potential future partnerships. Participants also had the opportunity to visit JRC laboratories, where cutting-edge testing methodologies are developed to ensure the safety, durability, and environmental compliance of advanced battery systems.

This collaborative meeting with key battery associations concluded with a commitment to continue joint efforts aligning JRC, BEPA, and EGVIA activities with industry needs, and establishing the next steps for advancing safety standards and regulations in the field of battery technology.
