BATSS takes the stage at the EU-INGENIOuS cluster webinar

On 6 November 2025, BATSS took part in a new edition of the EU-INGENIOuS Battery Cluster webinar series, a joint initiative gathering European research projects working on advanced battery technologies.
The event, titled “Next Generation Battery Systems: Smart Packing for Maximum Power,” attracted 42 participants, including industry experts, researchers, and representatives from several Horizon Europe initiatives.

The session generated lively discussions and insightful questions, demonstrating the growing interest in innovative design concepts, thermal strategies, and lightweight architectures for future battery systems.

A collaborative push for smarter, high-performance battery packs

The EU-INGENIOuS cluster brings together the projects BATSS, NEXTBAT, VERSAPRINT, TEMPEST, and EXTENDED, each addressing key aspects of next-generation battery systems.
This shared effort aims to accelerate Europe’s progress toward safer, more efficient, and more powerful energy storage solutions across mobility, industrial, and stationary sectors.

The webinar focused on two main axes:

  • Innovative design approaches to increase power and energy density
  • Testing and validation strategies to ensure mechanical, thermal, and electrical safety

BATSS highlights: smart packing for demanding use cases

Representing BATSS, Manex Larrañaga Ezeiza (CIDETEC Energy Storage) shared the project’s progress on thermal and mechanical design optimisation, essential for safe operation under demanding marine, off-road, and stationary scenarios.

Key elements of the BATSS contribution included:

  • The macro-cell concept, enabling modularity while optimising pack energy density
  • Advanced thermal simulations to validate safe system behaviour
  • Mechanical modelling and testing guided by Safe-by-Design principles
  • Integration strategies for improved power handling and robustness

These developments underline the BATSS ambition to deliver a next-generation battery system that balances performance, safety, and sustainability.

Knowledge Exchange Across Cluster Projects

Each project shared technologies at the forefront of European battery innovation:

  • NEXTBAT: Advanced materials and cell-to-pack expertise from its industrial partners
  • VERSAPRINT: Multifunctional, lightweight components and 3D-printed micro-channels
  • TEMPEST: Optimised mechanical design with significant mass reductions
  • EXTENDED: Intelligent BMS concepts and enhanced thermal-mechanical management

Together, these contributions highlight the importance of cross-project collaboration in strengthening Europe’s battery innovation ecosystem.
