On 16–17 June 2026, the BATSS consortium held its fifth General Assembly in Valencia, Spain, hosted by LOMARTOV. The two-day meeting marked the M30 milestone of the project, bringing partners together to review the latest technical progress, align ongoing activities, and prepare the final stages towards the validation of a safe, efficient and sustainable next-generation battery system for transport and mobile applications.
Partners presented the main achievements reached and discussed the work ahead as BATSS enters its final phase. The agenda covered project management, battery system manufacturing and validation, thermal modelling, mechanical design, safe-by-design principles, circular economy assessment, dissemination, communication, standardisation and exploitation.
A key focus was the progress of the final BATSS demonstrators. Partners reviewed the status of battery system assembly, testing preparation, electro-thermal validation, safety testing and the integration of key components, including the FLEXcooler®, Battery Management System, power switch and cloud communication functionalities. In parallel, discussions on modelling and simulation activities—including 3D CFD thermal simulations, cooling studies, thermal runaway modelling and venting behaviour—provided valuable insights to further optimise the battery system design and support the upcoming validation phase.
Sustainability and circularity remained central throughout the meeting. Partners reviewed ongoing work on second-life applications, disassembly and recycling procedures, automated sorting concepts, recyclability assessment tools, and life cycle and cost analyses, reinforcing BATSS’s commitment to delivering a battery system that combines performance, safety and environmental sustainability.
The General Assembly also featured strategic sessions on dissemination, communication, exploitation and standardisation. Partners reviewed communication KPIs, upcoming publications, open-access outputs, our Zenodo community datasets and preparations for the final BATSS workshop, to be held in San Sebastián on 27 October 2026. The consortium also advanced its CEN and CENELEC workshop activities on developing a reference electric power profile for non-common electric vehicles, particularly for off-road applications such as electric excavators. A dedicated Key Exploitable Results session further refined the project’s exploitation roadmap, addressing ownership, market uptake and the future application of BATSS innovations
As BATSS approaches the final months of implementation, the Valencia General Assembly provided an important opportunity to consolidate progress, address the remaining technical and strategic challenges, and align partners around the next steps.
